Two legends are coming together for the first time: the new Land Rover Defender, arguably the most complete 4x4 off-road vehicle at present, and our tried and tested, very successful modular roof rack system CargoBear. The bear crowns every new Landy, whether it’s a 90 or a 110. At Nakatanenga, we took our time to finetune the CargoBear for every design detail, technical specification and user requirement the Defender L663 (from MY 2020) challenged us with. At its full length of 2.41 m, our rack consists of 3 crossbars, two platform elements as well as front and rear modules. The overall width of 1.20 m gives you almost 3 square meters of fully usable cargo space. The entire surface can be loaded and walked upon – a decisive advantage over many competing products. The CargoBear is screwed into the original mounting points of the roof rails which have to be removed, of course. Another great advantage over the competition is the fact that you can configure the CargoBear rack in two heights: At 100 mm, the glass roof – if you have one –remains fully functional. If your Defender doesn’t have a glass roof or if you prefer a lower, more streamlined profile, the rack can be mounted at only 80mm above the roof. Whether you’re choosing the high or low mount, aerodynamics was always our main concern in the CargoBear’s development. Nakatanenga CargoBear cross bars There’s only one real alternative for the full CargoBear roof rack: the CargoBear cross bars on their own! If you don’t need the entire cargo platform on your New Defender, because you carry only long work equipment or sports gear like surfboards, skis or kayaks, the cross bars alone will do the job perfectly. The same applies for roof tent campers. For the new 110 Landy this means that the standard setup consists of 3 cross beams for the entire length of the roof. The sturdy bars will give you a roof rack that is significantly more robust than any off-the-shelf rooftop carrier. The cross bars are available single or as sets of 2 or 3. They are 100% identical to the ones we sell in the CargoBear kits, i.e. they are 1,450 mm wide (1,300 mm usable) and 120 mm long. The aluminum bars feature stainless steel bases that connect to the standard roof rail via inserted sliding blocks (included). As with the complete CargoBear platform, the bars can be mounted on two height levels, 80 or 100 mm respectively. Choosing the higher level will ensure that your roof window retains its full functionality. The crossbars feature a very wear and tear resistant matte black RAL 9005 powder-coating. A great number of recessed lashing slots allow you to attach lashing rings, brackets, hooks, stud fittings etc. You can also attach your lashing straps directly, of course. The standard CargoBear accessories will also fit the various lashing and mounting points. GDW hitch bracket with 13-pin Erich Jaeger E set The New Defender L663 (from MY 2019) is not only an extraordinary off-road vehicle, it also packs a remarkable punch. The wide variety of engines from Diesel and petrol to PHEV deliver between 200 and 525 HP and 400 to 650 Nm torque. Its power makes the new Landy the ultimate towing vehicle up to 3.5t towing capacity. And the fact, that the trailer hitch – whether detachable or electrically deployable – has to be ordered as an extra, is not really a disadvantage. When configuring your New Defender it’s probably best to skip this feature and get a heavy duty towbar like the one from GDW with its 13-pin electric connector kit by Erich Jaeger. The advantages of the GDW trailer hitch are obvious: A 4-bolt mounting plate will fit the included towball hitch but also any other type of coupling, the GDW coupling block comes at a much more competitive price than the OEM parts. Installation and road use do not need to be technically certified, by the way. The GDW towbar was custom-designed specifically for the New Defender. After all, there are many pieces of gear and equipment that need to be quickly accessible but shouldn’t be kept on the inside, because they are either too filthy or they smell of gas, Diesel or other automotive chemicals. A perfect storage place for these things is our side-mounted storage box for the New Landy’s right side.* The side-mounted storage box is made from Plastic and offers a hefty 24 l of volume. With a cargo giant like the new Defender 110 (from MY2020), this will inevitably lead to chaos. That's why we’re putting a bear in the cargo area, a small CargoBear. This additional shelf with its generous dimensions of about 860 x 525 mm takes a load of about 50 kg and is intended for heavier equipment, tools etc. As with the CargoBear roof rack, the cargo shelf is made of robust, powder-coated and perforated aluminum. Solar panel for bonnet Next generation solar cells are increasingly integrated into structural components. Instead of separate, awkwardly mounted modules on the roof of a house, for example, the roof tiles themselves function as solar panels. Our PV modules for the hoods of 4x4s and vans follow this principle. While they do not yet replace the hood, they are so thin (only 3 mm) and so flexible that they precisely fit the shape of the hood – making them hard to recognize as an extra add-on. In addition, they are also extremely aerodynamic and robust enough to even step on them if needed. The hood modules for Defenders Td5 and Td4, New Defender, Jimny 2, Mercedes G-Class and Sprinter have an output of between 75 and 90 W at 12 V, depending on the model. Your only requirement is sufficient sunlight to generate enough power for the primary and secondary batteries in the car during the day. Additional reversing light for Land Rover New Defender from MY 2020-2025
Upgrading the reverse lights on your car is always a good idea – better visibility for others and for yourself when you’re parking backwards, when maneuvering with and without trailer or driving off-road in the dark. Stronger reverse lights also greatly improve the performance of reverse cameras. For the New Defender, we are offering an extremely elegant solution that needs no external fittings and has the seamless appearance of standard equipment. Underneath the rear lights on both sides of L663, two recesses in the body are ideal for housing the additional reverse lights with their six white LEDs each. Mounting the LEDs in the recesses is easy. Two perfectly fitted brackets are attached inside the gaps with self-adhesive tape. Once the plinths are fitted the LEDs are simply screwed in. The wiring is plug & play and includes all the necessary connections to the existing reverse lights. Installation or de-installation (if necessary) are simple DIY projects because the rear light panels are only clipped in and can easily be removed. Since there are no drill holes or other alterations necessary, there are no permanent traces or damages on the vehicle’s exterior. More Space and Organisation Inside
The open shelf in the dashboard of the new Defender isn’t an accident. It’s a nod to the old Landy, where all sorts of bits and pieces ended up: screws, pens, parking tickets, odds and ends. Today the cockpit is more modern, smoother - almost too tidy. For those who find this little throwback not quite as practical, there’s the Nakatanenga Dashboard Pouch for the New Defender.
There’s plenty else that can be optimised in the interior. In the precision-made Sun Visor Organiser, pens, parking tickets and sunglasses find a fixed place. Practical and Exterior Storage on the New Defender
Even though the new Defender offers generous space inside, there’s kit that’s better stored outside. For this the Side Storage Box for the New Defender provides a suitable solution. It mounts on the passenger side in place of the ladder and creates extra space for tools, recovery gear or anything that needs to be quickly handed outside.
The plastic box with around 24 litres of capacity attaches directly to the bodywork and factory roof rails, or to the CargoBear Roof Rack, if fitted. Inside, a cargo net keeps things organised and secure during transport. The box is lockable, splash-proof and well thought-out down to the details: a drain plug in the base makes cleaning easy.

Our CargoBear - the Roof Rack for the New Defender
The CargoBear was already a real eye-catcher on the old Defender. For the New Defender we’ve further developed it. The reversing camera is perfectly integrated, and the CargoBear can be mounted at two heights. At 100 millimetres the panoramic roof is still usable; at 80 millimetres the rack sits closer to the roof. A great option for those who might still want to fit into a garage or car park. By the way, the CargoBear Roof Rack - like most of our own products - is Made in Germany.

Winch, Skid Protection and Snorkel for the Defender from MY 2020
The New Defender is built for off-road. But for real off-road missions even more is called for. That means a winch, and when the track gets rocky, protection underneath. With the Terrafirma Winch Mounting Kit, various winch models can be installed.
At the front, the Nakatanenga Skid Plate made from 8-millimetre powder-coated aluminium provides protection. Compared to the 5-millimetre factory skid plate, that’s about 60 per cent more material and more reserves when the trail gets rough. For those who mean business, there’s also the Two-Piece 6 mm Aluminium Skid Plate. That way the engine and gearbox stay well protected even on tougher sections.
Those who take the Defender L663 through rivers or across desert tracks should not forget the Snorkel when converting to a travel vehicle. The raised air intake at roof height protects the engine when wading through deeper water and reduces the risk of water damage. In dusty environments it also ensures cleaner intake air, saving the air filter and extending service intervals.
Suspension for the New Defender
The standard suspension of the new Defender works reliably on the road and when towing, but remains a compromise between comfort and off-road capability. For those looking for more reserve away from tarmac, the TREKFINDER Lift Spring Kit for the Defender II is the answer. The springs fit both the 90 and 110 and deliver a firm, sporty setup without losing everyday comfort. For New Defenders with air suspension, matching Lift Rods are available in two heights. This gives the New Defender exactly the extra ground clearance that makes the decisive difference off-road.
Tyres and Wheels for the New Defender
Alongside suspension and skid plates, tyres are what really determine how far a Defender can go. For the L663 there are several complete wheel and tyre sets, tuned for off-road, daily use and long-distance travel. A particular highlight is the Twin Monotube Project AT Wheel - robust, precisely manufactured and equipped with a replaceable, bolted protection ring. It combines stability with a clean, functional design.
The wheel is offered with two tyre types: the BF Goodrich KO2, a proven all-terrain tyre that performs well on road and off, in summer and winter alike, and the Radar Renegade R/T+, which bridges the gap between all-terrain and mud-terrain. The latter combines on-road comfort with serious off-road ability - two worlds, one tread. Both tyres are pre-mounted on the wheel in sizes 275/55 R20 and 285/55 R20. In addition to the Twin Monotube Project AT, both tyre types are also available mounted on other alloy wheels complete with tyre pressure sensors, so the perfect set for use and style can be chosen directly.

More light is always a good idea, and with the right integration kits, this can be achieved on the New Defender with minimal effort. Adding work lights or auxiliary lamps was easy on older Land Rovers, but on the new Defender it’s worth a closer look before drilling or cutting. - Does the winch mounting kit fit all New Defender models?
The Terrafirma Winch Mounting Kit is suitable only for diesel models of the New Defender. The petrol and hybrid versions have much more technology behind the front bumper - sensors, radiators and lines - leaving no space for a winch as there is on the diesel.
- Which tyres fit the Defender from MY 2020?
Those who take their New Defender seriously off-road will find ready-to-go wheel and tyre sets at Nakatanenga. We offer 18- and 20-inch wheels, with the 20-inch version being the most popular. All-terrain and mud-terrain combinations are common, depending on use. Proven choices include the BF Goodrich KO2, a true all-rounder for road and trail and winter-approved, and the Radar Renegade R/T+, which leans more off-road yet remains pleasant on tarmac.
- How much weight can the CargoBear Roof Rack carry?
The CargoBear can handle quite a bit. The manufacturer’s limits apply, of course. On the New Defender 110 with off-road tyres, the permitted roof load is 168 kilograms. The CargoBear itself weighs around 50 kilograms, leaving roughly 100 to 110 kilograms for roof tent, boxes and gear. When stationary, more is possible - up to 300 kilograms. That’s enough for a roof tent with two adults and luggage.
- Can the snorkel be retrofitted to the Defender L663?
Yes, a Snorkel can easily be retrofitted to the New Defender. It relocates the intake to roof height, protecting the engine when wading through deep water. A second benefit shows in dust: on gravel and desert tracks, tyres kick up dense clouds close to the ground. With the raised intake, the engine draws in cleaner air, preserving the air filter and maintaining performance. In everyday driving, the snorkel stays discreet; off-road it becomes essential equipment in remote regions.
- Will the New Defender with roof rack still fit in a car park?
Whether a New Defender from 2020 with roof rack still fits into a car park or garage depends on several factors: tyre size, any suspension lift and whether there’s a panoramic roof. The CargoBear is an especially low-profile rack that can be mounted in two heights. The New Defender measures around 1.97 metres from the factory with roof antenna. With a 2.20-metre car park entrance, no lift and in the lower mounting position, it should still fit.
