But if you don’t know which tires and wheels fit your vehicle, you’ll end up at the inspection without a sticker. That’s why we only offer wheels with ABE or parts certificates that truly fit your vehicle. Pro tip: if you buy complete wheel sets from us, you’re on the safe side.

Steel vs. Alloy Off-road Wheels

Steel or alloy? Honestly: it’s like whisky or beer—both have their place. Steel wheels are the brawlers: heavy, raw, they take dents and keep rolling. Alloy wheels are lighter, often better-looking, and long since robust enough not to give up at the first trail.

Steel Wheels – the Workhorse for Overlanders

Steel wheels are the old warhorses. Heavy, raw, almost indestructible. They might pick up a dent, but you can knock it back into shape with a hammer. If you often kiss rocks or plow through scree, you know: steel forgives.

No wonder many base models come on steel. Usually cheaper to buy and even when abused, they’ll bend rather than break. Best of all: in any backcountry workshop there’s someone who can get them rolling again. Mounting tires is more forgiving too—tire levers and brute force, steel doesn’t mind. Downsides? Heavier than alloys, more prone to rust, and visually—well, classic.

Alloy Wheels – the Lightweight All-rounders

Alloy wheels are the lighter all-rounders. They save weight, look sharper, and are now robust enough for off-road use. In terms of load rating, they also hold their own in commercial duty. Manufacturers love alloy anyway: it enables designs steel can’t and is cheaper to produce. No surprise most cars roll off the line on alloy today.

Heads up though: quality and durability vary massively. Cheap rims can be damaged by the first hard hit even if the load rating looks fine on paper. Quality wheels will rather deform and run slightly out of true—still getting you home. Roadside repair with a hammer? Not happening. If you value quality, you’ll drive better and longer. That’s why you’ll only find quality wheels here—nothing else.

The Nakatanenga ANR CLASSIC steel rim is our answer for those who love the original look but want more punch. Made exclusively for us, wider, TÜV-approved and available in black or white. Choose the primed version to have it painted in your body color. A wheel that blends tradition and modern robustness—no soft compromises. Fits almost all Defenders up to model year 2016.

Dotz Dakar Steel Wheels (various versions)

The Dotz Dakar steel wheel is the workhorse among steel wheels. Always stable, always straight, and so timeless that even veterans nod in approval. Built as an indestructible performer for Sahara rallies, it shrugs off dirt, rocks and daily use. Light, dark or silver—whatever, the Dakar just works. ZU Alloy Wheel 16" for Land Rover

The ZU alloy wheel for Land Rover from ZU Rims Ltd is the alloy answer to Wolf & Co. Developed in England specifically for Land Rover for those who want more than bland OEM rims. Light yet seriously tough. Defender, Discovery I and Range Rover Classic run like on rails with ZU 7x16 ET11; Discovery II and Range Rover P38 have their own ZU 8x16 ET38 version.

Visually clean with five spokes and up to 1,400 kg load rating, the ZU has cult status. It saves weight, carries wide tires proudly and looks like a Wolf in a tailored suit on a Defender. If you want alloy without bling—go ZU.

Boost Style 16" for Defender, Disco I & RRC

The Boost rim was the standard alloy. From the late 90s countless Defenders, Discovery I and late Range Rover Classics rolled off the line with it. Silver, simple, distinctive—the wheel that shaped the last Defender generation. The AEZ Panama isn’t just any alloy. Built for heavy vehicles, it carries up to 1,026 kg per rim—perfect for the New Defender and other heavy hitters. Y-spoke design keeps it lighter and elegant without losing strength.

FAQ about Off-road Wheels

Do I need an approval document (ABE/parts certificate) and do I have to register the wheels?

If a wheel has a parts certificate, the inspection authority must approve the tire–wheel combination for your vehicle individually and it must be entered in the registration papers. If the wheel has an ABE with the matching tire size, or if it fully corresponds to a wheel listed by the vehicle manufacturer’s ABE for that tire size, registration is usually not required. What makes a true off-road wheel?

An off-road wheel isn’t a fashion item—it’s a tool built to take abuse. While road wheels live on asphalt, off-road wheels are made for impacts, loads and adventure.

The details matter: high load ratings, reinforced bead seats and robust construction. Many are steel—heavier, but you can often hammer them back into shape. Prefer alloy? Specially hardened alloys save weight yet stay strong.

Lower or even negative offset widens the track and improves stability. Reinforced hump shapes or beadlock systems help keep the tire seated at low pressures—a real advantage off-road.

Because off-roading gets serious, premium rims are powder-coated or multi-layer painted to resist rust and stone chips.

Large or small wheel diameter for off-road use?

If you’re tackling serious trails, go with a smaller wheel and taller tire. For most overland travel and gravel roads, larger wheels with the right tires also work—here it mostly comes down to preference.

Which off-road wheel fits my vehicle?

Fitment depends on bolt pattern, offset, load rating and, of course, the vehicle model. Our shop only shows wheels with the proper certificates or ABE. Use the filter at the top to select your vehicle and see compatible models. More info and technical details are in each product page.

What is offset (ET)?

Offset indicates how far the wheel sits in the arch—measured from wheel centerline to the mounting face. ET0 means the centerline aligns with the mounting face. ET40 sits 40 mm further inboard. Small ET = wheel sticks out more; large ET = sits further in.

Can I run multiple tire sizes on one wheel?

Yes, but only the sizes approved in the certificate. Each wheel lists allowed tire dimensions. Certificates are usually available on our product pages under “Documents”—or just ask support.

Which specs matter when buying wheels?

Size, width, bolt pattern, center bore, offset (ET) and load rating. And don’t worry: if no load rating is shown but the wheel is marked as vehicle-compatible, the necessary approval exists.

How do I care for steel and alloy wheels properly?

Clean regularly and rinse off salt in winter. Avoid aggressive cleaners and hard brushes. Best use the Ballistol rim cleaner—safe for steel and alloy. For steel, an extra corrosion protection (paint or wax) is worthwhile.

How do I know if I may mount a wheel on my vehicle?

Check the certificate or ABE: it lists approved vehicles. In the shop it’s even simpler—we show compatibility directly. Easiest of all: use the filter at the top to pick your vehicle. Smarter still: buy wheels pre-mounted with matching tires.

What is load rating?

Load rating is the maximum weight a wheel can carry. The heavier your vehicle and harder the use, the more important a high rating. Each wheel must at least meet half the axle load listed in your papers.

What do the numbers on wheels mean?

Example: 7x16 ET-5 5x139.7

• 7 = wheel width in inches
• 16 = wheel diameter in inches (matches tire diameter)
• ET-5 = offset of −5 mm
• 5x139.7 = bolt pattern, i.e., 5 studs on a 139.7 mm circle

If a wheel is listed as fitting a specific vehicle in our shop, the bolt pattern will be correct—no need to measure.
