Everything was better in the past? Not necessarily, but these Defender conversion kits for Series 2/3 style doors are not only for retro fans but definitely add a lot of quality and functionality that has become lost along the way in the standard Defender doors from model year 1983 onwards.
So, what are the advantages that these Series-style two-part doors have over the Defender originals? Apart from the fact that they come considerably cheaper, most of the pros lie in the design and the construction of the two-piece doors. For a start, the lift-up handle is recessed and doesn’t protrude as with the plastic push-button handle on the standard doors. This improves safety because they won’t catch on obstacles while off-roading or navigating narrow passages. The lift-up handles also grant better theft prevention as they come with a stronger locking mechanism. Furthermore, the door’s design also creates more space inside the cab, a fact that tall drivers will appreciate immensely. Soft top models, especially, will profit from the completely removable door tops. The slide windows themselves offer quality glazing and one thing you never need to worry about again is the winding mechanism underneath the door trim.
In terms of quality and assembly these conversion kits leave nothing to be desired. The frames of door tops and the bottoms are hot-dip galvanized and the aluminum skins adhere to original factory specs. The split retro doors will fit all Defender Models from 90s to 130s and model years from 1983 to 2016. They come with all the required fastenings, handles, locks, strikers and seals. Standard functions of the original doors like car alarm contacts and automatic interior light switch are accommodated for. The only modification required is the drilling of two new holes each for the strikers, because they are differently positioned due to the different locking mechanism. However, we will include a drilling template.
