The mattress(es)
The mattress naturally plays a very important role in our comfort concept (see box). Here, it should be remembered that not all foam is the same. But the differences are not simply in the material used or the manufacturing method. The interaction of the individual factors is highly complex and would go beyond the scope of this article. At this point, it should therefore suffice to explain the relevant points.
For the mattress of a folding roof tent, there are two ways of solving the "problem" of folding the tent:
- The mattress is made from two individual elements, which are then joined only at a folding seam. However, this method has two serious disadvantages. Firstly, the mattress support is interrupted exactly in the middle of the body, and secondly, when the tent is folded together, there is no free space that can be used for storing sleeping utensils during the trip.
- One manufactures the mattress from one piece. Since bending the mattress when folding the tent would inevitably destroy it within a very short time, it must be able to roll up, which then also results in a gap between the mattress sides inside and the resulting space can be used for transporting the sleeping utensils.
TIP! Do not be impressed or even misled by the low pack size height of a tent - this simply results from the fact that the mattress is divided into two parts. The consequence: see point 1. - But that's not all. The mattress of a folding tent must also unfold again after a possible six-month break when the tent is unfolded. This is where, among other things, the compression hardness of the foam (see box) comes into play, whereby there are not only pressure areas (inside) but also tension areas (outside) in the rolling up part of the mattress. However, this is precisely the kind of stress for which conventional upholstery or mattress material is not designed at all. And this is exactly why we turned to the specialists at Saar-Schaum ...
- Only a few manufacturers can produce mattresses with a length of 240cm from one piece. Mostly such oversizes are simply glued with ordinary contact glue! Our mattresses, however, are made from a single piece, which means that there are no solvent emissions.

Our Saar foam mattresses are Oeko-Tex certified. In our opinion, this is of great importance, since the volume of space in a folding tent can be described as rather manageable.

Finally, it should be mentioned that our mattresses are provided with a tricot layer (see figure above), i.e. an additional cover that is responsible for getting the mattress back into the mattress cover once it has been removed for washing. Without the tricot layer, this quickly becomes a real waiting game, as the mattress cannot slide into the cover, but instead flops, causing dents in the mattress that are almost impossible to remove.
